Biological Aphid Control

Description:

In greenhouses and conservatories, the parasitic wasp Aphidus, will control aphids all year round (outdoor control is less predictable as environmental factors such as heavy rain and predators will affect success).

Aphids, or greenfly, may be shades of grey or light yellow as well as green. They multiply at an alarming rate and debilitate the plant by sucking out the sap. The plant wilts and becomes distorted and the aphids leave behind a sticky substance on which a sooty black fungus grows. Aphids also molt and the white cases of their skins can be seen on the leaves of infested growth.

The parasitic wasp lays its eggs into immature aphids, so the success of the control can be observed as the aphids swell up and change colour before they die.
